The government of Kenya has made a payment of approximately $30 million to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), officially acquiring the rights to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On Tuesday, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced the successful transfer, indicating that Kenya has fulfilled its financial responsibilities to CAF.
"I am pleased to share that the Government of Kenya has successfully met all financial and institutional requirements as we make progress toward co-hosting the 2027 AFCON," he stated.
Mvurya emphasized that the payment of the hosting fee reaffirms Kenya's dedication and readiness for the tournament. He noted, "In line with our commitments, the Government has transferred the required $30 million hosting fee to CAF, underscoring our credibility and commitment."
He also highlighted that this payment solidifies Kenya's role as a co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania as part of the Pamoja initiative.
Looking ahead, Mvurya mentioned that next month discussions will commence to create a standardized framework to facilitate visa processing, coordinated tax exemptions, customs regulations, and efficient clearance procedures for all goods and services associated with AFCON.
He remarked that this move signifies President William Ruto's vision of making Kenya a leading host for international sporting events.
"Sports is not only a means of unification but also an engine for economic growth, youth empowerment, job creation, and enhances our global reputation," he elaborated.
Kenya will collaborate with Uganda and Tanzania, further emphasizing regional cooperation and a unified approach to hosting a world-class AFCON tournament in 2027.
Mvurya concluded with confidence, stating, "We are wholly devoted to hosting a tournament that will surpass both the continent's and the world's expectations."
