The Oyo State Police Command has announced the re-arrest of a suspected kidnapper who had fled from police custody.
In an update provided on Wednesday, March 18, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on the night of March 17, 2026, around 11:30 p.m. This took place during a routine stop- and-search operation executed by officers from the Ojongbodu Area Command at Irepo Junction in the Ojongbodu area of Oyo.
The statement explains that the police officers noticed a “suspicious individual” walking in the area, which prompted them to stop and question him.
The individual was identified as Ayomide Kareem, a 25-year-old resident of Osorun’s Compound in Oyo.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that he was the same individual who had earlier escaped from police custody at the Jobele Division on March 10, 2026, related to suspected kidnapping activities.
Currently, the suspect is in police custody and is assisting law enforcement with their ongoing investigations.
Following his escape and the mishandling by the officers involved—who are now under detention and facing disciplinary procedures—Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, initiated an extensive manhunt that resulted in the suspect's recapture.
This incident had previously led to community unrest, prompting the Command to take measures against the officers involved. These measures included the reassignment of the Divisional Police Officer of Jobele Division and other administrative actions aimed at enhancing accountability and professionalism.
The Commissioner also extended appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for the unwavering support and commitment towards maintaining discipline, professionalism, and operational effectiveness across police commands nationwide.
The Command has reassured the community of its dedication to ensuring safety and security, affirming that they will continue their efforts to bring all criminal offenders to justice.
