Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who leads the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and is the founder of the Kwankwasiyya movement, convened a private meeting with Rauf Aregbesola, the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in Abuja on Thursday.
The specifics of their discussions remain undisclosed, but Kwankwaso confirmed that the meeting took place at his residence in Abuja.
Kwankwaso expressed his joy in hosting his esteemed friend, stating, "It was a pleasure to receive my dear friend, His Excellency Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State and National Secretary of the ADC, at my residence this evening."
This meeting occurred shortly after the Kwankwasiyya movement indicated ongoing conversations with the ADC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding potential political realignments in view of the upcoming 2027 elections.
Known as a significant player in northern politics, Kwankwaso is reportedly assessing new alliances due to internal challenges within the NNPP and amid speculation surrounding his future political strategies.
Aregbesola, a key figure in southwestern politics and former Minister of Interior, serves as a crucial connection between Kwankwaso's northern constituency and prospective southern counterparts.
His position as the national secretary of ADC intensifies the speculation regarding the possibility of a wider coalition between the two parties.
Analysts assert that the meeting in Abuja emphasizes Kwankwaso's approach to constructing networks across party boundaries, particularly as Kwankwasiyya leaders publicly deliberate on collaborating with both the ADC and NDC.
While neither Kwankwaso nor Aregbesola elaborated on the details of their discussions, the timing of their meeting is regarded as notable.
Observers suggest that this might signal the onset of formal negotiations aimed at forming a coalition that could significantly influence Nigeria’s political dynamics leading into 2027.
