Political leaders representing the six local government areas within Kwara South Senatorial District have officially declared their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bid for a second term in 2027. Simultaneously, they have advocated for the rotational principle of the governorship to extend to Kwara North and indicated their preference for the current Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Salihu Danladi Yakubu, for the top position.
These declarations were formalized during a large-scale rally attended by party stakeholders in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area. The event served as a platform for political figures from across the southern senatorial zone to articulate their unified stance ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
Ibrahim Lawal, a retired Director of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, presented the consolidated position of the stakeholders. He stated that the endorsement of President Tinubu stems from the perceived positive early outcomes of the administration's policy framework.
"We are endorsing the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 election. A second term for President Tinubu is crucial for consolidating the structural reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which have already begun to demonstrate tangible economic and infrastructural benefits," Lawal explained.
He further elaborated that the push for a shift in the governorship to Kwara North is aimed at achieving a balanced power rotation within the state, promoting equity and inclusivity.
According to Lawal, this demand addresses long-standing concerns regarding political representation and fairness in the state's leadership.
"Since Nigeria transitioned back to democracy in 1999, the governorship of Kwara State has predominantly been held by individuals from Kwara Central, who have occupied the office for approximately 20 out of the past 27 years," he noted.
He highlighted that while Kwara South has had an eight-year tenure under former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara North has not yet had the opportunity to produce a governor in the current democratic era.
"Kwara Central has produced three of the four democratically elected governors since 1999, whereas Kwara North has not had a governor in the state's 27-year democratic history," Lawal added.
He emphasized that the advocacy for a rotational shift is grounded in the principles of fairness and comprehensive inclusion.
"The decision for the governorship to move to Kwara North is based on the imperatives of inclusion, equity, justice, and fairness among the three senatorial districts," Lawal stated.
Supporting this position, the Deputy Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ojo Oyebode, introduced a motion at the rally advocating for the transfer of the governorship to Kwara North.
The proposal received significant endorsement from numerous party stakeholders present, who also reaffirmed their support for the incumbent Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. They passed a vote of confidence in his leadership and acknowledged his ongoing development initiatives across the state.
Speakers at the rally, including former local government chairmen Joshua Omokanye and Wasiu Bamidele, lauded the governor for the execution of projects within their respective areas, characterizing them as impactful and oriented towards the needs of the people.
They also voiced their approval of the President's policies, assuring that the inhabitants of the zone would remain steadfast in their support for Tinubu during the 2027 elections.
