Kwara: Blaze Damages Motor Park With 38 Vehicles

A fire incident early Saturday morning severely impacted a motor park in the Odo-Okun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, destroying two vehicles and threatening others. The Kwara State Fire Service responded quickly to contain the fire, preventing further damage.

In the early hours of Saturday, a fire outbreak occurred at a motor park located in the Sawmill Garage area of Odo-Okun, Ilorin, Kwara State, affecting approximately 38 vehicles.

The blaze began around 2:48 a.m. and directly impacted two vehicles: a Toyota Sienna and an 18-seater bus, under the registration numbers JJJ876HJ and KSF223SK, respectively.

According to the driver of the bus, he had just returned from a long-distance journey the previous afternoon and was resting inside the vehicle when he detected flames emanating from the bus.

Efforts were made by people present at the garage to relocate other vehicles, but the nearby Toyota Sienna also ignited before the firefighters arrived on the scene.

Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters promptly responded and managed to contain the fire by around 3:03 a.m., effectively preventing it from spreading to additional vehicles parked in the vicinity.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Adekunle advised vehicle owners and those in the transport sector to conduct regular checks on their vehicles for potential fuel leaks or electrical malfunctions, especially following long trips.

Furthermore, he urged transport operators to allow adequate space between parked vehicles and to keep portable fire extinguishers readily available to facilitate quick action in emergency situations. The fire service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state, encouraging the community to report any fire-related incidents promptly.
