Kwara United has issued a strong condemnation of the violent incidents that followed their rescheduled match against Rivers United, asserting that the club disassociates itself from the behavior of what they termed as "irrational elements" in the crowd.
The match, part of Gameweek 22, took place in Ilorin on February 18, ending with a score of 1–1. However, it was marred by disturbances that sparked immediate concern throughout the league. In a formal statement released the same day, Kwara United expressed their "profound regret and deep concern" regarding the unrest.
The club specifically highlighted the unacceptable attack on Okey Kpalukwu, a respected figure known as the Chairman of Chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League. They expressed that this incident was deeply regrettable, emphasizing that respect for match officials, security personnel, and all involved parties must be upheld as fundamental principles.
Kwara United reiterated that the actions displayed are not reflective of the core values or the identity of the overwhelming majority of its supporters, whom the club acknowledged for their unwavering loyalty and passion over the years. The management insisted that Kwara United champions sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the field.
The club also extended heartfelt and sincere apologies to Mr. Kpalukwu, the Rivers United event delegation, match officials, security teams, and any fans who were adversely affected by the unrest.
