During an interview with the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Tebas identified the North African kingdom as a prime candidate for the league's international expansion initiatives.
Tebas highlighted the substantial number of La Liga supporters in Morocco and the country's close geographical relation to Spain as key factors making it a logical venue. "Considering the large number of followers the Spanish league has in Morocco, I believe it would be more feasible to play in Morocco, especially since the logistical challenges related to travel are minimal," Tebas stated.
The La Liga president specifically pointed to Casablanca as a potential host city, noting the ongoing construction of the new Hassan II Stadium. This development aligns with Morocco's broader preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it is set to co-organize with Spain and Portugal.
Tebas underscored the significance of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region within the league's global strategy. Data from La Liga indicates a more significant following in this region compared to the English Premier League, with clubs like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid commanding considerable passion among fans.
Holding official matches in Morocco would signify an enhancement of sports collaboration between Rabat and Madrid. Tebas referred to the "strong connections and good rapport" between the two nations as a solid basis for such a venture.
While prior attempts to stage matches in the United States encountered regulatory obstacles and resistance, Morocco's proximity could help resolve many of the logistical and legal issues that hindered past proposals.
