A chief magistrate’s court in Ikeja, Lagos, has mandated the detention of a 19-year-old security guard, Isreal Mendi, who is charged with the defilement of his neighbor’s four-year-old daughter.
The chief magistrate, M. F. Onamusi, directed that the defendant be held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.
The magistrate refused to allow the accused to enter a plea and set a date of April 9 for the next proceedings, pending guidance from the Director of Public Prosecution’s office.
Isreal, residing at No. 22, Folarin St., Badore, Ajah, Lagos, is facing allegations of defilement.
Prosecutor Adegoke Ademigbuji, an assistant superintendent of police, informed the court that the alleged crime occurred on February 16 at the suspect's home.
Ademigbuji claimed that the accused lured the child into his room under the pretense of sending her to retrieve something from her brother, but instead, he forcefully engaged in sexual acts with her.
He further stated that this offense violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, enacted in 2015.
