The Lagos State Government, alongside various stakeholders, has highlighted the crucial roles that leadership development, effective communication, and emergency response skills play in empowering young individuals to make significant contributions to their communities.

This emphasis emerged during the Youth Leadership, Emergency Action and Development (YOU-LEAD) program, facilitated by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy in conjunction with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area in Lagos.

Dr. Ayeni Olasumbo, who leads the Adolescent and Youth Health Division at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, spoke during the event, underscoring that the initiative aims to furnish youth with practical leadership and communication abilities to effect positive change within their communities.

She pointed out that effective communication is an essential trait for leaders, noting that the training sessions are designed to build participants' capacity to articulate their thoughts clearly and assertively across various scenarios.

Furthermore, she mentioned that the program also introduces participants to emergency response techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), preparing them to react suitably during emergencies.

Dr. Ayeni expressed her belief that the skills acquired through the training would trigger a ripple effect, with participants sharing their newly gained knowledge with others in their respective communities.

In addition, Feigne Suinner, the Vice President of Eagle Toastmasters Club, emphasized the pivotal role communication plays in uniting communities and facilitating collaborative action. She explained that adept communication enables leaders to express their messages effectively, encouraging community members to back development initiatives.

Suinner advised the youth to be intentional in their communication, focusing on their choice of words, tone, and attentive listening.

Dr. Femi Ogunmoku, a seasoned medical professional in emergency medicine, observed that the training has equipped participants with the expertise to manage emergency situations like accidents, injuries, and sudden health crises.

He also reinforced the importance of reaching out to emergency services when required, reminding attendees to utilize Lagos State's emergency contacts, such as 112 and 767.

Hon. Sesan Olowa, the Chairman of Ibeju Lekki, remarked that the program is part of broader initiatives aimed at preparing youth for leadership responsibilities in society. He highlighted that young individuals are instrumental across various sectors in Nigeria, necessitating investments in their development and skill enhancement.

Represented by Balogun Hakeem Oluwole, the Supervisor for Youth and Sports in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Olowa affirmed the local government's commitment to organizing additional programs focused on empowering youth, preparing them to engage positively within their communities.

He expressed optimism that the insights gained from the training would enable participants to become proactive leaders, capable of spearheading development and effectively addressing challenges in their neighborhoods.
