Lagos State is set to reinstate the monthly environmental sanitation initiative starting Saturday, April 25, 2026, marking ten years since its last implementation.
The initiative was previously halted in November 2016 during Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's tenure. This cancellation was prompted by a ruling from the Federal High Court in 2015, which found that the restriction of movement during sanitation hours was unconstitutional.
In a statement posted on X, Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, appealed to citizens to take responsibility for their surroundings. He emphasized the importance of cleaning their environments and ensuring that drainage systems in front of their homes are well-maintained.
"I am pleased to announce to all Lagos residents that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will resume effective Saturday, April 25, 2026, taking place on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM," Wahab stated.
He urged residents to actively participate in this civic duty, which includes properly disposing of waste and maintaining cleanliness in their communities. Wahab affirmed that the Lagos State Government will enforce compliance with this exercise fully.
“This initiative represents a collective effort pivotal to our commitment towards fostering a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resistant Lagos," he concluded.
