A fully loaded truck crashed into St. Matthias Catholic Church, located along the Agulu Lake-Golden Tulip Hotel Road in the Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, and immediately caught fire.

The incident took place late on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, causing significant traffic congestion as emergency responders worked to contain the fire and prevent it from worsening.

Witnesses reported that the truck was traveling at high speed when it lost control, veering off the road and crashing through the church's fence, which triggered the fire.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and there were no injuries; however, the truck's driver escaped the scene promptly after the crash.

Chukwudi Chiketa, who heads the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the occurrence.

According to Chiketa, speeding and loss of control were factors contributing to the crash.

He stated, "A fire incident occurred yesterday at St. Matthias Catholic Church, Agulu, following a road accident involving a heavy-duty truck. Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck lost control, veered off the road, and collided with the church area, resulting in a fire outbreak.

"A team of firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service responded quickly to the distress signal and effectively managed the situation, bringing the fire under control and preventing further damage. Operations at the site have been concluded, and firefighters have safely returned to their station."

Additionally, Chiketa mentioned that another fire incident transpired at Climax Industry Limited located on Nnanka Street, Oduma Layout, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

He noted that this fire, which also occurred on Wednesday, prompted an urgent response from the firefighting teams, with personnel from both Ogidi and Okpoko Fire Stations deployed to the scene.
