Political commentator Mahdi Shehu has accused the Federal Government of showing bias regarding the recent flag-off of a N25 billion chapel project at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday night, April 29, Shehu reacted to news confirming the commencement of the chapel project, a joint effort by the Federal Government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Shehu raised concerns about the lack of similar large-scale projects being initiated for Muslims and questioned when such opportunities would be extended to the Muslim community.
He highlighted that the N25 billion project was inaugurated on April 26, 2026, with the presence of key government officials including the Secretary to the Federal Government, George Akume, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, and other senior figures from both the government and CAN.
According to Shehu, SGF George Akume described the project as a symbol of "confluence of faith and progress" intended to cater to the passengers' physical, emotional, and spiritual requirements.
He also referenced Archbishop Okoh’s statement that travellers require a dedicated space to find tranquility before boarding their flights.
Shehu emphasized that the project's inauguration by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Aviation Minister signifies the President's full awareness and endorsement.
Furthermore, Shehu pointed to the allocation of land for the chapel, suggesting that high-ranking government officials must have been involved in approving the site. He questioned when Muslim travellers would receive comparable access to prominent land within the airport for the construction of a mosque.
"When will equal financial contribution be provided to the Muslim faithful as was done for CAN?" he inquired.
He also questioned whether government officials would offer the same level of support for a mosque project.
Shehu described the N25 billion project as an "equation with two variables, one known and the other unknown," suggesting that the equation needs balancing for clarity, otherwise it reflects a situation where favoritism leads to neglect.
He drew an analogy of a mother in charge of a kitchen who prioritizes her own children while deliberately starving others.
