The Anambra State High Court located in Ogidi has delivered a death sentence to Chidubem Anawonwa for the murder of his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa. This ruling was handed down by Justice Lauretta Oyeka after Chidubem was found guilty of the crime.
The incident took place on April 23, 2019, in Umuokokpa Aborji village, situated in the Idemili South Local Government Area. This act contravenes Section 271 of the Criminal Code Cap. 36 Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991, as amended.
In the case numbered HID/7C/2020, the prosecution, represented by Chief State Counsel Obiageli Nwankiti and Principal State Counsel Uju Igboeli, presented compelling evidence of Chidubem’s history of violent behavior towards his mother, which included instances of physical abuse and threats to her life.
Reports indicate that on that day, while his young niece was confined in a room within their residence, the 37-year-old Chidubem strangled his mother after subjecting her to multiple bruises.
Based on the testimonies of five witnesses for the prosecution, the court rejected Chidubem's claims of an alibi, despite his legal representation being provided pro bono, and proceeded to pronounce the death sentence.
