A married man in the Sinda District of Zambia's Eastern Province has passed away at the residence of his girlfriend. The deceased, identified as 50-year- old Julius Mwale, had reportedly informed his wife that he was leaving home on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at approximately 7:00 AM to undertake some piecework on a farm with a friend, Gezani Banda.
However, instead of proceeding to the farm, Mwale went to his girlfriend, Anna's house. According to police reports, Banda informed the authorities that Mwale was discovered deceased in a seated position at Anna's home around 2:00 AM on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Eastern Province police commander Robertson Mweemba stated that Mwale and Banda had gone to Anna's residence at about 6:00 PM, where they consumed locally brewed beer known as Kachasu. Reports indicate that two other individuals joined them, and after eating nshima, they purchased four 175ml bottles of Kachasu and began drinking.
Before consuming the purchased alcohol, Mwale's girlfriend allegedly offered his friend, Banda, some "score beer" which Banda reportedly drank alone. Following the drinks, Mwale's friends departed, but he decided to stay, telling them he needed to spend the night at Anna's house to help guard her maize harvest.
During police questioning, Anna stated that she only became aware of an issue when she heard a loud snoring sound around 2:00 AM. She attempted to wake Mwale, but he did not respond. She then alerted the village headman, who subsequently informed Mwale's relatives before reporting the matter to the police.
Police officers visited the scene and confirmed finding the deceased in a sitting position. The body has been transferred to St. Francis Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
