Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota was the target of an attack involving an unidentified substance during a town hall meeting on Tuesday. According to local police in Minneapolis, a participant in the event used a syringe to spray a liquid at her.

Fortunately, Omar was not injured and continued her addresses to the attendees after the incident occurred.

In her response on social media platform X, she remarked, "I’m okay. I’m a survivor, and this small agitator isn't going to keep me from my duties. I will not let bullies succeed."

A journalist from the BBC who was at the venue noted that the liquid had a sour scent reminiscent of a chemical product.

Authorities reported that a 55-year-old man named Anthony James Kazmierczak has been charged with third-degree assault and is currently being detained, as detailed by the local sheriff’s office.

In the aftermath of the assault, Omar, a member of the Democratic Party, assured the attendees, stating, "we will persist… we are Minnesota strong."

Another participant, Alfred Flowers Jr., expressed admiration for Omar's bravery and determination to complete the town hall despite the attack.

Footage from the event showed members of Omar's security team urging, "make a hole" as they escorted Kazmierczak out of the venue. As he was being removed, he yelled that Omar was "pitting us against each other," although it was unclear to whom he was referencing.

Kazmierczak was taken into custody at the event site, with forensic analysis being conducted by the police.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the assault in a social media post, stating, "Violence and intimidation are unacceptable in Minneapolis. We can have our disagreements without endangering lives... Such actions will never be accepted in our city."

Omar, who made history in 2019 as the first Somali American, first African- born American, and one of the first two Muslim American women elected to the US Congress, was speaking to an assembly of approximately 100 individuals at a community meeting in north Minneapolis.

The discussion topic centered around issues linked to the presence of federal immigration officials following two recent incidents of deadly shootings involving US citizens by immigration officers in the state.

Earlier in January, immigration officer shot and killed US citizen Renee Good, while border agents were involved in the death of another citizen, Alex Pretti, spurring widespread protests and public outcry.

During her address, Omar advocated for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and called for the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, shortly before the incident took place.

Despite officials advising her to terminate the event, Omar remained resolute, stating, "We will keep talking. Just give me ten more minutes. Please don’t allow them to steal the show."

Many residents speculate that the intensified immigration enforcement in Minnesota may be correlated with President Donald Trump’s criticisms of Omar. Trump has previously labeled her as a "radical left lunatic" and made derogatory comments about her.

On January 18, Trump posted on Truth Social that Omar "should be in prison, or face an even harsher penalty, being sent back to Somalia, one of the worst countries worldwide. She could assist in MAKING SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN!"

Minnesota hosts the largest Somali immigrant community in the United States.

On Tuesday, Trump stated that his administration would "de-escalate a little bit" in Minnesota following the recent violence.
