Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who previously sought the presidency, has announced his switch to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing significant concerns about the current trajectory of Nigeria's politics and economy.
In a declaration made on April 12, 2026, Hayatu-Deen explained that his move is motivated by a desire to forge a more promising future for Nigerians. He stated, "Like many of you, I desire a safer, more prosperous future for Nigeria, but the nation faces fundamental problems that are being ignored."
Reflecting on his political journey, Hayatu-Deen recalled entering the political arena in 2022 as a presidential candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He described that initial period as one filled with potential, but noted that subsequent events have led to widespread disappointment among Nigerians. "However, since then, the hopes and yearnings of Nigerians have been met with bitter disappointment," he added.
Elaborating on his decision to defect, Hayatu-Deen declared, "This is why I have taken the decision to join the ADC which I know is the vehicle for change."
He observed that citizens across Nigeria are increasingly seeking a government that can effectively address critical national challenges. "Every day I hear from people across Nigeria that they want a government that is focused on fixing the problems, and delivering a safer and more prosperous future for their families," he commented.
Hayatu-Deen underscored the importance of capable leadership, stating that Nigerians are looking for "a steady, calm and credible government alternative that will tackle insecurity, reduce the cost of living, and foster job creation."
Furthermore, Hayatu-Deen expressed profound apprehension regarding the diminishing democratic space in Nigeria. He cautioned, "I am also deeply concerned about the increasing shrinkage of our democratic space. Voices are being stifled, institutions are under strain, and the space for credible opposition and real choice is being systematically closed."
He emphasized that the essence of democracy lies in providing tangible choices to the populace. "Democracy must offer Nigerians genuine options," he asserted.
Drawing upon his extensive background in both the private sector and public service, Hayatu-Deen indicated his intention to utilize his experience to drive economic development and create employment opportunities nationwide.
Looking ahead to the forthcoming general elections, Hayatu-Deen pledged his commitment to active political participation, announcing, "From this day onwards until the 2027 elections, I will campaign relentlessly as a party member, to help the ADC win the elections and deliver the better future Nigeria desperately deserves."
