A leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bashorun Dele Momodu, has rejected worries that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might leverage financial means to sway the party’s presidential primary.

The Ovation Magazine publisher made these comments on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Morning Brief,’ where he addressed inquiries about how the party intends to navigate the presidential aspirations of its prominent members before the primary election.

Momodu emphasized that funding for campaigns should not be misconstrued as bribery, asserting that financial resources are essential for proper campaign logistics and operational activities on election day.

"It’s not solely about money. When we mention finances, it includes logistics. We are not referring to bribery," stated Momodu.

He referenced the 2024 United States presidential election, pointing out that considerable campaign donations do not assure success.

"In the U.S., for instance, Kamala Harris raised more funds than Donald Trump, having over a billion dollars at her disposal, yet she did not secure a victory," he remarked.

Momodu elaborated on the productive purposes of campaign financing, stressing election security rather than enticing delegates.

"For instance, on election day, it is crucial to ensure that each polling booth is managed appropriately, preventing any tampering with your votes. That is what we refer to when we talk about money," he explained.

Addressing rumors surrounding Atiku’s financial prowess, Momodu pointed out that the former vice president does not have control over state resources as some other political actors do.

"Atiku is an entrepreneur. He has conducted business since his departure from office in 2007. He does not govern any state in Nigeria," he said. "Asiwaju controls Lagos, and I am not aware of other states under his control, while Wike has authority over Rivers."
