The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended Loretta Asadu and her daughter Chikamso in connection with the alleged murder of their 70-year-old relative, simply referred to as Mama Oliver, in Ezema Nru, situated in the Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the arrest on Wednesday evening, February 25, 2026, stating that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
According to Ndukwe, "The suspects have been taken into custody, and inquiries are ongoing."
The victim, reportedly from Umabor-Ehalumona, had moved to Ezema Nru to care for Loretta and her daughter, who are said to be grappling with mental health issues.
Residents reported that the tragic event took place on Tuesday, February 24, and has left the community in disbelief.
A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that the deceased had expressed feelings of hunger shortly before the alleged assault. The neighbor added that Loretta’s son, Abumchukwu, had gone out to fetch food for his elderly relative.
It is claimed that before leaving the residence, Abumchukwu had to restrain his mother due to her increasingly violent behavior.
"While he was away, Chikamso, who also exhibits signs of mental instability, is said to have untied her mother. They then reportedly assaulted the elderly woman, dragging her behind the house and attacking her with weapons while accusing her of stealing their money," the source recounted.
Another local resident, Ifeanyi, described the situation as alarming, stating that the victim sustained severe injuries.
"The deceased was a peaceful person. We received word of a terrible occurrence. The entire event is truly heartbreaking," he expressed.
The body of the deceased has been taken to a morgue in Nsukka for an autopsy.
