Jose Mourinho is gearing up for an emotional return to Real Madrid as his Benfica team faces the Spanish powerhouse this Wednesday in a crucial Champions League match.

This matchup sees Mourinho returning to the club he managed from 2010 to 2013, where he will go up against Alvaro Arbeloa, one of his former players who is now at the helm of Real Madrid.

Arbeloa is stepping into his first senior management position, having taken over from Xabi Alonso, another player who learned under Mourinho, after Alonso was dismissed two weeks ago following a brief tenure. Arbeloa has progressed through the ranks of Real Madrid's youth setup before being promoted to the senior squad.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Mourinho expressed admiration for Arbeloa both in a professional context and on a personal level.

"Arbeloa is my boy; he’s not just a former player of mine," Mourinho remarked. "He’s one of my favorite individuals on a personal basis. While he may not have been the best athlete I had at Madrid, he certainly was one of the finest individuals. He is the last person I'd want to put under pressure."

When questioned about the potential for exploiting Arbeloa's inexperience, Mourinho refuted the idea but clarified that his goodwill would cease on match day.

"Arbeloa can coach any team in the world, and I want him to be successful at Real, except for tomorrow," he added.

In response, Arbeloa praised Mourinho, highlighting his significant influence on his career.

"I am incredibly proud to hear everything he said about me," Arbeloa remarked. "I am excited and happy because he has been much more than just a manager to me. On a personal note, he has been crucial to my career. Today, I consider him a great friend and I am eager to see him tomorrow for a big hug."

Real Madrid enters the encounter with strong momentum, having secured a 6-1 victory over Monaco last week, positioning them third in the standings with 15 points. They trail Bayern Munich by three points and are six points behind leaders Arsenal, aiming for a top-eight finish to ensure automatic progression to the round of 16.

Conversely, Benfica faces a more daunting situation, currently sitting 29th in the standings with just six points, putting them in the elimination zone. A win against Real Madrid is crucial for them to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage playoffs alive.

Acknowledging the obstacles ahead, Mourinho emphasized the need for a balanced strategy from Benfica.

"We must score one more goal than our opponents to succeed—that's clear," he stated. "We need to play offensively, but we also can't suffer excessively in the process. Finding balance is critical. Without it, Madrid will capitalize on our weaknesses."

Mourinho also reflected on Alonso’s exit from Real Madrid and expressed his pride in the achievements of his former players who have transitioned into coaching roles.

"Xabi is another one of my boys," he remarked. "I feel delighted when I see my former players accomplish great things. What transpired with Xabi at Madrid post my departure isn’t my concern, but he has demonstrated the high level he can achieve as a coach, and I believe he is happy now."

Describing the upcoming match, Mourinho, who led Real Madrid to LaLiga glory in the 2011-12 season in addition to Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup victories, stated that it is a must-win for Benfica.

"We’ll be up against an excellent team with remarkable players," Mourinho acknowledged. "We have nothing to lose, and we will strive to remain in the competition by maintaining our balance and playing our game."
