The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has now taken into its care a 17-year-old Nigerian girl, who hails from Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State. The agency is investigating a suspected case of human trafficking involving the minor.
According to an official statement from NAPTIP, the victim returned to Nigeria on Sunday, April 26th, around 5:00 PM. She was accompanied by Ambassador Mrs. R.O Mohammed, the Charge d'Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Monrovia.
Initial reports suggest the young girl was lured and trafficked to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, with the intent of sexual exploitation. The statement indicated that she managed to escape from her captors and subsequently travelled to Liberia, where she eventually received assistance to reach the Nigerian Embassy.
Upon her arrival at the airport, the Ambassador officially handed the victim over to NAPTIP representatives. The agency has assured her of necessary care, protection, and support.
NAPTIP has confirmed that it has initiated the required processes to assist the victim. Concurrently, investigations are underway to identify and apprehend all individuals implicated in this trafficking network.
