The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Nasarawa have elected to conduct direct primaries for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
This resolution came during a gathering involving governorship aspirants, members of the National Assembly, and other significant party figures. Governor Abdullahi Sule declared the need for the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone to lead the selection for the next gubernatorial candidate.
The Governor underscored the necessity of fairness and equity within the party’s decision-making framework, asserting that the meeting served as an opportunity for stakeholders to share their insights on effectively managing the primary election period while ensuring the party remains unified.
Governor Sule indicated that the majority of the stakeholders were in favor of adopting a direct primary system, resonating with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's position on allowing every party member a say in choosing the party's candidate.
He assured that the process would be transparent, fair, and in line with both the APC constitution and the Electoral Act, aiming to eliminate any potential disputes.
"No one should have any reason to leave the party, as we are dedicated to conducting a very open and democratic process consistent with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. Anyone who departs after losing does so because they are unfamiliar with how to lose," he stated.
Regarding the issue of zoning, Governor Sule pointed out that the principles of equity and brotherhood amongst the senatorial zones guided their choice, confirming that Nasarawa West is now entitled to the governorship position.
"I will continue to insist that, in the spirit of brotherhood, we should allow the governorship to rotate to Keffi Zone, which has been without a governor for two decades," he emphasized.
The Governor expressed gratitude to the stakeholders for their collaborative efforts and voiced confidence that the APC would emerge more robust and unified following the primaries, poised for a successful run in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
