Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, announced on Sunday that the National Assembly has initiated the process to establish a decentralized policing system. The focus of this framework is to embed accountability and guard against potential abuse by political actors.
Bamidele, who also holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, affirmed the parliament's commitment to creating a state police structure that would genuinely serve the interests of all Nigerians, irrespective of their social standing.
His remarks were conveyed in a statement from his Media Office, released on Sunday to commemorate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 74th birthday. The statement also acknowledged the administration's efforts to stabilize the nation and tackle security challenges.
According to Bamidele, President Tinubu has fostered robust collaboration with the National Assembly in the fight against insecurity. The administration is reportedly employing innovative strategies, moving beyond traditional methods to combat extremism, terrorism, and violent criminal activities.
He further indicated that President Tinubu has consistently supported the establishment of a decentralized police system as a key component of broader measures to protect lives, private property, and vital national assets throughout Nigeria.
The core objective of the proposed model, as explained by Bamidele, is to delegate policing authority to sub-national governments. This devolution of power is intended to promote effective governance, particularly in communities that are difficult to reach.
"This is one request that the National Assembly has been treating with priority," he stated.
The Senate leader elaborated that the envisioned framework will include stringent accountability measures. These are designed to deter the misuse of power by politicians, bolster the justice system, curb impunity, and introduce protections for fundamental human rights.
"All these initiatives were at the core of shared conviction, which the Presidency and National Assembly have been working on to secure Nigeria better," Bamidele said, assuring the public that the planned system would conform to international best practices.
Bamidele also took the opportunity to reflect on President Tinubu's leadership at 74, characterizing him as a statesman whose dedication to national development has consistently influenced Nigeria's direction.
He highlighted President Tinubu's steadfast commitment, patriotism, and resilience in guiding the nation through difficult periods. The reforms introduced by the President, though initially challenging, are beginning to show positive results.
Describing Tinubu as "a man of history, purpose and vision," Bamidele concluded that the president has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to overcome obstacles in his pursuit of national progress.
