The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) have joined forces to promote environmental sustainability through the empowerment of undergraduates.
This collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at joint initiatives in environmental conservation and sustainability.
The agreement also includes plans to establish a 5-hectare Conservation Park within the university grounds and develop programs designed to increase youth involvement in environmental protection.
Furthermore, the partnership entails registering UNILORIN students as members of the NCF, and undertaking collaborative research and project development, such as assessing the carbon footprint of the university's forests.
During the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating it demonstrates the university's commitment to environmental stewardship.
He remarked, "This partnership embodies our dedication to fostering environmental sustainability and conservation within our university."
"We commend the NCF, a crucial partner, for this distinctive collaboration that strengthens our endeavours in environmental conservation and sustainable development."
"We anticipate a productive working relationship with the NCF to make a positive difference on our campus and beyond," he added.
The Director General of NCF, Dr. Joseph Onoja, emphasized the importance of actively promoting environmental sustainability.
"The deliberate actions and efforts of the University of Ilorin are highly commendable. Establishing conservation initiatives on the ground will significantly amplify our advocacy for nature conservation."
"Collaborations like this will enhance our demonstration efforts, provide a practical training ground, and serve as a hands-on learning centre for university students in forest resources management," he stated.
