Nigeria's newly deployed CCTV surveillance system has achieved a significant success, leading to the apprehension of three individuals suspected of vandalizing the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge. The suspects were captured in real-time as they were removing 156 'cat eye' reflective lights, installed to improve road visibility and enhance the bridge's appearance. The incident was promptly detected by the monitoring team responsible for overseeing the federal government's upgraded CCTV network along this route.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced this development on Saturday during the presentation of the suspects. He urged all Nigerians to embrace a sense of collective responsibility towards public infrastructure and to actively safeguard assets within their communities.

The apprehended individuals, who identified themselves as scavengers known locally as 'Bola', provided no satisfactory explanation for their actions when questioned.

Minister Umahi lauded the swift response of the Nigeria Police but also voiced his apprehension regarding what he termed a pervasive lack of concern for public infrastructure. He warned that such attitudes pose a significant impediment to national development initiatives.

Furthermore, the Minister condemned what he described as unacceptable recklessness by road users on a newly opened section of the coastal highway, directly linking it to the recent fatality of a construction worker on the same route.

He instructed the State Controller of Works to ensure that the suspects face prosecution. Additionally, he reiterated that the CCTV 'Eagle Eye' system on the Third Mainland Bridge is fully operational and will continue to be used to deter and expose any further criminal activities.
