The Federal Government has stated that shipments of Lenacapavir, a novel drug aimed at preventing HIV, are anticipated to arrive in Nigeria in March 2026. This information was shared by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) in a press release on Monday, March 2.

NACA is currently intensifying preparations for the rollout and introduction of Lenacapavir (LEN) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Lenacapavir is known as a long-lasting HIV prevention medication, designed to be administered via injection just twice annually.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that Lenacapavir significantly diminishes the risk of HIV infection, offering nearly complete protection against the virus.

In the statement, NACA highlighted, “The Government of Nigeria (GON) is progressing with the preparations for the introduction and distribution of Lenacapavir (LEN) as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). This initiative is part of the government's commitment to bolster HIV prevention and accelerate efforts towards controlling the epidemic.”

The statement further noted that the supplies are expected to arrive in March 2026.

NACA mentioned that a coordinated approach is being established to ensure the rollout of this new prevention alternative is both structured and of high quality, particularly in priority states.

The agency confirmed that Nigeria is set for a phased launch of LEN PrEP, supported by regulatory approvals, system preparedness, trained personnel, and engagement strategies within communities.

Additionally, it was revealed that landscape assessments and readiness evaluations have been successfully conducted in ten states: Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, the Federal Capital Territory, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, and Lagos to assess service delivery capabilities and pinpoint necessary implementations.

NACA has also organized a nationwide training of trainers in Abuja, followed by further training sessions for healthcare professionals in states selected for this rollout.

Moreover, education and communication materials have been created to facilitate awareness campaigns leading up to the implementation of this new preventive measure.
