The torch for the 2nd Niger Delta Games commenced its journey to Benin, Edo State, on February 9 from Calabar, Cross River State.
This Torch, which symbolizes the Games, is set to travel through the capitals of all nine states participating in the Niger Delta region.
In Calabar, Torchbearer Patience Okon George led Sports Commission officials and athletes from U.J. Esuene Stadium to the Governor’s office, where they were officially greeted by Deputy Governor Peter Odey and Itiako Ikpokpo, the Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, the event's organizers.
The procession featured vibrant displays, with young men and women adorned in traditional Calabar Carnival costumes dancing to local Efik music emanating from speakers mounted on vehicles.
Deputy Governor Odey, standing in for Governor Bassey Otu, assured athletes of proper equipment and welfare support to ensure their success at the Games and urged them to compete honorably.
Ikpokpo expressed gratitude to the State Liaison Committee for executing an engaging Torch Tour and encouraged other states to create unique celebrations.
The organizers announced that the next stop for the Torch will be Akwa Ibom State on February 10, followed by Abia on February 11, Imo on February 12, and Rivers State on February 13.
On February 14, the Torch will reach Bayelsa, with Delta State set to receive it on February 16, and the tour concluding in Ondo on February 18.
The torch will ignite the cauldron at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, signifying the Games' start on the opening day and will be passed to the next host state at the conclusion.
