Nigeria is reportedly set to commence the delivery of natural gas to the nation's capital, Abuja, by July, utilizing the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline. This announcement comes from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and represents a significant achievement in the country's ongoing efforts to expand its gas infrastructure.

Should this timeline be met, it would mark a pivotal moment in Nigeria's strategy to leverage its extensive gas reserves for economic advancement and sustainable development.

"We're hoping that by July, gas will be delivered to Abuja through the AKK gas pipeline," a spokesperson for the NUPRC was cited as saying, according to the commission's internal magazine. The report also noted that Reuters had quoted this statement.

The AKK pipeline, spanning 614 kilometers, is designed to transport over 2.2 billion cubic feet of gas daily. It is a cornerstone of Nigeria's strategy to enhance gas utilization, supply power generation facilities and industries in the northern parts of the country, and reduce reliance on alternative fuels such as diesel and fuel oil.

Nigeria possesses Africa's largest proven natural gas reserves, estimated at over 210 trillion cubic feet. However, a lack of adequate infrastructure has historically hindered its full exploitation, making the AKK pipeline a critical project for realizing the nation's gas-driven economic ambitions.

The $2.8 billion project, initially conceived in 2008, has faced several postponements, with previous targets for completion including 2023 and the last quarter of 2025.

While construction commenced in 2020, progress was reportedly impacted by funding challenges and complex engineering tasks, particularly the section requiring passage beneath the River Niger. This particularly intricate segment involved advanced techniques such as horizontal directional drilling below the riverbed.

According to industry insiders, the gas destined for the AKK pipeline will primarily be sourced from the southern producing regions, connected via the East-West Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben (OB3) gas pipeline.

In January, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) introduced its Gas Master Plan (GMP) 2026. This plan aims to spur industrial growth and bolster energy security across the nation.

The GMP 2026 builds upon the framework of the initial Nigerian Gas Master Plan established in 2008 and aligns with the federal government's 'Decade of Gas' initiative.

It is intended to function as a comprehensive strategy for coordinated development, more effective execution, and increased value creation within the gas sector over the coming decade.
