In a move to bolster Nigeria's air defense capabilities and modernize the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has conducted significant discussions with Leonardo Aircraft Division in Milan, Italy. These discussions focused on the acquisition of the M-346 fighter ground-attack aircraft, a key element in the Service’s ongoing program to renew its fleet and enhance operational effectiveness.

Air Marshal Aneke highlighted that the M-346 program represents a substantial advancement in revitalizing the NAF's combat capacity. He emphasized that the aircraft would significantly improve precision strike missions, elevate pilot training standards, and strengthen Nigeria's regional deterrence through well- coordinated delivery and integration into operational service.

The visit to Italy, which took place from January 19th to 20th, 2025, was part of a broader strategic dialogue with Leonardo, encompassing both its Aircraft and Helicopter Divisions. The Nigerian delegation included Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Defence and Finance, other senior government officials, and high-ranking NAF officers.

The Chief of Air Staff indicated that this initiative reflects the strong commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President and Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces, to prioritizing air power modernization and fostering defense-industrial cooperation as fundamental to national security.

During meetings at the Leonardo Helicopter Division, Air Marshal Aneke characterized the engagement as a valuable opportunity to evaluate Leonardo’s advanced technological offerings and to solidify the existing partnership with the NAF. He acknowledged Leonardo's consistent support and professionalism, noting the vital role that modern platforms like the AW-109 Trekker Type B helicopters play in Nigeria's counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and internal security operations.

The Air Marshal also pointed out the successful operational history of Leonardo aircraft already in service with the NAF, including the G-222, ATR-42, and various AW-109 helicopter models. These assets have consistently demonstrated reliable performance in combat, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and other national support missions.

He stressed the critical importance of prompt delivery of aircraft, spare parts, ground support equipment, and comprehensive training packages to achieve rapid operational readiness and maintain mission effectiveness.

Discussions at the Leonardo Aircraft Division specifically centered on the M-346 fighter ground-attack aircraft, which the CAS described as a pivotal development in updating the NAF's combat fleet. He explained that this aircraft would not only enhance precision strike capabilities but also improve training efficiency and overall force readiness.

He underscored the necessity of synchronizing aircraft delivery schedules with the readiness of the Main Operating Base in Nigeria to ensure a smooth transition into service.

Furthermore, Air Marshal Aneke highlighted the significance of early and thorough training for pilots, engineers, and logistics personnel, coupled with the establishment of a Leonardo Support Office within Nigeria. These measures are expected to boost aircraft availability, reduce turnaround times, build local technical expertise, and ensure the long-term sustainment of current and future NAF platforms, aligning with the federal government’s objectives of self-reliance and operational efficiency.

Mr. Andrea Mirteto, Senior Vice President of Sales for the Leonardo Helicopter Division, expressed gratitude for the visit on behalf of Leonardo. He reaffirmed the company's dedication to Nigeria as a crucial strategic partner and guaranteed Leonardo's full commitment to the timely delivery, sustainment, and expansion of collaboration for both the AW-109 Trekker and M-346 programs.
