Nigeria celebrated a double triumph over the weekend as its junior handball squads secured commanding victories in the International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy Africa Zone 3 Phase held in Lomé, Togo.
The Nigerian Under-18 team demonstrated exceptional skill and strategic play in their final match, defeating Ivory Coast 32–19 to claim the championship title in their division. The young squad maintained control throughout the contest, reinforcing their growing status as a formidable presence in African youth handball.
Continuing the winning streak, the Under-20 team delivered another outstanding performance, overcoming Benin Republic 39–29 in their final encounter. Their efficient play and potent offense secured a comfortable victory, marking the second title for Nigeria at the tournament.
These victories mean both the Under-18 and Under-20 teams have now been crowned champions of the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 Phase. This success positions them as promising future talents in the sport and secures their qualification for the upcoming continental competition, where they will represent their zone against Africa's elite teams.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has acknowledged these achievements, stating that the team's success reflects Nigeria's ongoing commitment to grassroots handball development, a key objective for the Commission.
