The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into reports claiming civilian casualties from an air interdiction operation that took place on January 25, 2026, in Kurigi Village, located in the Kontokoro District of Mariga Local Government Area in Niger State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF's Director of Public Relations and Information, announced the activation of a Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team tasked with conducting an immediate and thorough evaluation of the incident.
Ejodame acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations concerning loss of life and injuries, expressing deep concern for the affected individuals. He reaffirmed that ensuring the safety of civilians and non-combatants is a fundamental principle underlining NAF operations.
He noted that the NAF has been actively applying its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP) over the past year. This plan incorporates considerations for civilian protection throughout all phases of operational planning and execution.
Furthermore, Ejodame highlighted that improvements have been made through enhanced training, refined procedures, and additional safeguards aimed at reducing the risk of harm to innocent civilians during military actions.
"In line with our dedication to transparency and accountability, the CHAI team will conduct a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding this operation," the statement remarked. "If deficiencies are found, suitable responsibility will be taken, appropriate corrective actions will be instituted, and lessons learned will be applied to avert future occurrences."
The Air Force reassured the public of its commitment to balancing effectiveness in operations with professionalism and restraint, aiming to uphold the trust of Nigerians as it continues its defense efforts.
In related developments, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) reiterated that all military operations throughout Nigeria are executed in strict adherence to the engagement protocols, international humanitarian laws, and respect for human rights.
Addressing recent security operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, indicated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), in collaboration with other security entities, are dedicated to intelligence-led and joint operations focused on dismantling terrorist, insurgent, bandit, and other criminal networks.
Despite the challenging security dynamics, Onoja stated that the troops continue to achieve significant success through precise strikes, clearance missions, and sustained patrolling across various regions.
"These coordinated initiatives have successfully disrupted criminal networks, facilitated the recovery of weapons and ammunition, rescued abducted individuals, and progressively restored normalcy in numerous affected areas," he noted.
He also emphasized the necessity of public engagement, identifying the media as crucial partners in national security endeavors, while advocating for professionalism and discretion in reporting sensitive operational issues.
