Troops from the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, part of Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have apprehended a suspected gunrunner named Abubakar Ibrahim and confiscated weapons in Taraba State.
Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, shared this information in a statement released on February 14, 2026, noting that the arrest stemmed from reliable intelligence.
"In a prompt and intelligence-led operation, troops from 6 Brigade Nigerian Army (NA) / Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) apprehended a suspected gunrunner on February 12, 2026, in the Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State," the statement indicated.
The operation was initiated following credible intelligence, which prompted troops stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari to act swiftly. The suspect, a 48-year-old man from Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, was successfully captured.
During the operation, a comprehensive search yielded significant recoveries, including six PKT machine guns, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a cash sum of One Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira (N170,000), a Peugeot 504 vehicle, one Q Seven mobile phone, as well as several bottles and wraps of perfume and two small containers of Vaseline.
The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing further investigation.
“This successful interception has once more thwarted the attempts of criminal elements to spread illegal arms in the state, significantly aiding ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and improve public safety,” the statement articulated.
Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, the Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 OPWS, praised the troops for their diligence, professionalism, and rapid response.
He encouraged them to maintain their operational momentum to fulfill the objectives set forth by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). Additionally, he acknowledged the collaboration of local residents who provided timely and trustworthy intelligence, which played a vital role in the operation's success.
The Commander urged the public to remain vigilant and to continue offering actionable information to security agencies.
"The Brigade is committed to its mission of safeguarding lives and property while working towards restoring enduring peace and stability across Taraba State,” he emphasized.
