Nigerian Army Detains 58 Suspected Illegal Miners in Edo State

The Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (NASEME) located in Auchi, situated within the Etsako West Local Government Area, has detained 58 persons believed to be involved in illegal mining operations in Edo State.

These arrests were made at an unauthorized gold mining site found in the Ososo area of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area. According to the Army Public Relations Officer, Captain Kennedy Anyanwu, the operation occurred around 1:00 p.m. on March 28, 2026, during a routine patrol conducted by troops following reliable intelligence.

Captain Anyanwu detailed that the action is part of the ongoing initiatives aimed at eliminating illegal mining and other unlawful activities throughout the region. He noted that the soldiers encountered no resistance when they moved in to apprehend the suspects.

The detained individuals have since been transferred to the Okpella Police Division for further investigation and potential prosecution. Captain Anyanwu reiterated the Army's unwavering commitment to fighting various forms of criminal activities in Edo State.
