Nigerian Army Guarantees Security for Onitsha Main Market Traders as Business Resumes

The Nigerian Army has assured safety and security measures for traders in the Onitsha Main Market as they reopen for business operations.

Following years of disruption instigated by criminal elements in Anambra State, traders have decided to resume their activities, a move that has been met with a commitment from the Nigerian Army for adequate protection.

In an official statement released by the 82 Division Headquarters, the Army praised the traders for their "courageous and patriotic" choice to reopen the market, deeming it a collective stance against insecurity and a significant step towards economic revival in the South-East region.

The Division noted that criminal groups, who masqueraded as freedom fighters, had previously instilled fear, disrupted livelihoods, and aimed to paralyze business activities in the area.

As stated by the Army, the actions of these groups sought to destabilize communities, erode public trust in government institutions, and hinder economic advancement.

The determination shown by traders to return to their shops further affirms the advancements made by security agencies in reinstating order and stability.

By choosing to reject intimidation and engage in law-abiding business activities, traders have illustrated their resilience and steadfast dedication to peace and progress.

The 82 Division confirmed that Onitsha Main Market, alongside other key economic sites in the South-East, would benefit from full security provisions.

Additionally, the Army assured traders, local residents, and stakeholders that security forces remain actively deployed and vigilant, with ongoing intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling remaining hideouts of groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network.

"The safety of traders and all law-abiding citizens is our top priority," emphasized the statement, encouraging residents to engage in their lawful endeavors without fear and to dismiss what it termed as unfounded threats from criminals.

Furthermore, the Army cautioned those engaging in violent acts within the region to surrender their weapons, abandon violence, and support peace initiatives. It warned that those who continue their offenses would face serious repercussions under the law, stressing that there would be "no sanctuary for adversaries of peace."

Reiterating its mission, the Division reaffirmed its dedication to protecting citizens, securing lives and properties, and upholding Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The public was encouraged to ignore false or malicious threats aimed at undermining peace efforts and to report security concerns promptly to authorities.
