The Nigerian Army has laid to rest a total of 12 personnel who were killed during counter-insurgency missions in Borno State. This included three commanding officers and nine other ranks.
The burial took place on Thursday morning between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the cemetery located within the Maimalari Military Cantonment in Maiduguri.
According to sources, the ceremony was carried out quietly and with stringent security measures in place to limit media involvement and prevent public unrest.
The burial was conducted with due military honors and attended by the commander of Sector 3, senior military officials, and family members of the deceased soldiers.
Representatives from the Borno State government, including Hon. Bukar Tijjani, the Secretary to the State Government, and Sugum Maimele, the Commissioner for Local Government, were also present.
During the ceremony, former governor Maina Maaji Lawan experienced a fainting spell but was revived shortly after.
Attendees provided different reports on the events; at one point during the proceedings, those present had to give him water to help him regain consciousness due to his fast-breaking requirement. It was noted that while nine soldiers were given Islamic rites, three were honored according to Christian customs.
The Borno State government has offered N5 million compensation to the families of the three Lieutenant Colonels, while families of the other ranks received N1 million each.
