The Nigerian Navy has achieved another significant operational milestone under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, successfully intercepting a substantial shipment of illegally refined petroleum products and apprehending individuals suspected of oil theft in the Degema/Ogbogoro/Ogbologo regions of Rivers State.
Captain AA Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, provided this information in a statement dated Sunday, March 22, 2026.
Acting on actionable intelligence regarding illicit activities in the vicinity, personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER deployed a patrol team aimed at combating crude oil theft. This led to the interception of two wooden vessels containing approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The operation resulted in the capture of eight individuals linked to the illegal operation, while other armed associates fled the scene upon recognizing the presence of the naval patrol team, as indicated in the statement.
"The apprehended suspects, along with the confiscated petroleum products, are currently in custody and will be transferred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible legal action," the statement noted.
It further emphasized that this operation aligns with the directives of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who has instructed operational commanders to enhance their efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and various maritime offenses across Nigeria’s waters.
"The Navy is committed to maintaining the momentum of Operation DELTA SENTINEL through intelligence-led operations, increased patrolling, and inter-agency collaborations to protect Nigeria’s vital national assets and economic interests," the statement concluded.
