The African Finance and Economics Association (AFEA) has revealed that its upcoming annual conference will delve into Africa's growth trajectory during a time of shifting global dynamics.
Titled “Africa’s Geoeconomic Development Agenda in a Global Realignment Era,” the conference will gather a diverse group of scholars, researchers, policymakers, and postgraduate students. They will explore how changing alliances, increased competition among major powers, and new global challenges are reshaping Africa's economic and political landscape.
Set to take place from July 3 to 5, 2026, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Nile University, Abuja, the conference aims to promote interdisciplinary discussions that deepen the understanding of Africa’s role in modern global politics and the ongoing debates on development.
The organizers have also put out a call for papers, inviting academics to submit proposals for panels, workshops, tutorials, prize lectures, and posters covering a variety of themes.
Submissions should include abstracts of no more than 300 words or 2 to 4 page full papers and proposals for workshops or panels.
In order to maintain an effective blind peer review process, all submissions must adhere to a two-title-page standard. Documents should be formatted in Microsoft Word and submitted electronically. It has also been emphasized that for papers involving co-authors, at least one must hold AFEA membership.
For organized session proposals, details needed include the session's title, the chairperson's name and affiliation, a list of three to five session titles complete with authors and their affiliations, a one to two-paragraph session description for inclusion in the conference booklet, and a brief explanation of how the papers relate to the theme.
The Selected Papers Committee will review submissions based on their relevance, methodological rigor, clarity, and thematic alignment. Proposals for organized sessions will be judged based on clarity, research quality, and overall contribution to the discipline.
Accepted papers will be published in the official conference proceedings, and authors are encouraged to submit their full papers for consideration in the Best Paper Awards, which recognize exceptional contributions from regular faculty, junior faculty, and doctoral students.
Winners of these awards will have the opportunity for expedited review and publication in the Journal of African Development. To be eligible for this competition, full papers must be received by June 2, 2026.
The topics available for submission encompass a wide array, including development finance, debt sustainability, global financial governance, health systems management, social protection initiatives, the implications of conflict and security dilemmas, financial technology advancements, and numerous others ranging from governance issues to demographic changes in Africa.
Additional specifics regarding annual meeting registrations and the finalized program will be shared via AFEA's social media channels, the spring edition of the AFEA Newsletter, and on the AFEA website. For any inquiries, participants can reach out to the AFEA-NUN Co-Chairs or the AFEA Selected Papers and Conference Publication Committee Chair, as detailed in the announcement.
