Nigeria is advancing its initiative to establish a comprehensive digital identity system, with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announcing plans to increase the enrollment of National Identification Numbers (NIN) for citizens residing internationally.
This initiative coincides with President Bola Tinubu's current visit to the United Kingdom, where key officials, including the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, are engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas of digital innovation and identity management.
While King Charles III and Queen Camilla host the visit, which carries significant diplomatic importance, it also acts as a catalyst for actionable policies, particularly regarding the identity challenges faced by many Nigerians abroad.
Dr. Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, revealed in a statement on Wednesday that the commission is aggressively pursuing the enhancement of NIN enrollment facilities across the UK, recognized as a major hub for Nigerian expatriates.
The approach includes setting up more enrollment centers, refining verification procedures, and implementing advanced digital solutions to eliminate persistent delays in the process.
During side events of the visit, Coker-Odusote emphasized the commission’s commitment to dismantling the barriers that have historically hindered access to identity services for Nigerians outside the country.
"We are actively working to guarantee that every Nigerian, no matter their location, can effortlessly acquire their NIN and utilize vital services associated with it," she remarked, highlighting the agency's dedication to inclusivity.
