Nigerian-American Deputy Dismissed and Arrested Over Alleged Prison Drug Smuggling Attempt

A Nigerian-American deputy with the Alexandria Sheriff's Office in Virginia, Amarachukwu Igwe, has been fired and arrested for allegedly attempting to introduce drugs into the Alexandria Adult Detention facility. The arrest occurred before any contraband could reach inmates.

A newly employed deputy at the Alexandria Sheriff's Office in Virginia, identified as Amarachukwu Igwe, has been terminated from her position and subsequently arrested. She faces charges for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit substances into the city's correctional facility.

Igwe, who reportedly joined the agency in July 2025, was apprehended on April 4, 2026. Authorities confirmed that the alleged drug delivery attempt was intercepted before any substances could be transferred to inmates within the Alexandria Adult Detention.

Investigators stated that Igwe's alleged actions involved bringing narcotics into the detention center with the intention of providing them to an inmate.

The sheriff's office indicated that its internal investigations unit detected the purported plan and intervened, preventing the drugs from being distributed or entering the general inmate population.

Following her arrest, Igwe was transported to the Arlington County Detention Facility for booking and processing.

She is currently facing multiple charges, including delivery of drugs to prisoners, conspiracy to deliver drugs to prisoners, and possession of a Schedule III-controlled substance.

Sheriff Sean Casey confirmed that Igwe's employment was immediately terminated upon her arrest.

"I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility," Casey stated. "Those who violate the public trust will face the full consequences."

Officials have announced that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
