The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reiterated its dedication to broadening Nigeria’s digital identity registry, as its nationwide campaign for National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment at the ward level is progressing across the country.
The initiative, which commenced on February 16, 2026, is structured to facilitate registration services at the local community level by extending enrolment points to wards throughout all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Reports from the Commission indicate that this undertaking is already showing positive results, with officials stationed at designated centres to register new applicants.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, the Commission’s spokesperson, NIMC highlighted the crucial function of the NIN in accessing vital governmental and financial services, characterising it as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s identity management infrastructure.
The Commission emphasised that obtaining a NIN is now a prerequisite for engagement in an increasing array of public and private sector activities.
“The decentralised enrolment at the ward level is a key component of our strategy to ensure comprehensive identity coverage and to dismantle obstacles that might hinder citizens and legal residents from registering,” the Commission stated.
NIMC encouraged Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the decentralised enrolment process by visiting designated centres within their respective wards.
The agency advised prospective registrants to confirm the locations of the nearest enrolment centres via its official website, to cooperate with the enrolment staff, and to provide accurate and verifiable personal details during the registration process.
To combat the spread of inaccurate information, the Commission urged the public to rely exclusively on its official communication channels. These include its website (www.nimc.gov.ng) and its verified social media accounts on X (@nimc_ng), Instagram (@nimc_ng), Facebook (National Identity Management Commission – NIMC), and LinkedIn.
The agency also outlined additional digital services accessible to the public. Applicants can begin the enrolment process online via the portal at penrol.nimc.gov.ng. For individuals needing to correct or update their details, the self-service modification platform at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng is available.
For secure digital verification of identity, Nigerians are recommended to download the NIN Authentication (NINAuth) App, obtainable from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
NIMC has also provided its customer care helpline, 0800-061-6462, for any inquiries or support required.
Reaffirming its core mission, the Commission stated its continued focus on providing “assured identity” to all Nigerian citizens and legal residents, noting that a robust and dependable identity database is fundamental for effective national planning, security coordination, and efficient delivery of services.
