The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has reported that over 50,000 doctors who received their training in Nigeria are now engaged in practice outside the nation. This trend is largely attributed to aggressive recruitment by foreign countries and the provision of superior welfare packages.
During a visit to the Kalapanzi Barracks in Kakuri, Kaduna, the NMA's National President, Bala Mohammed Audu, commended the Nigerian military, especially the Army, for their unwavering dedication to national defense.
Audu pointed out that the exodus of medical professionals is a significant loss for the country, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle both brain drain and medical tourism.
He stated, "There appears to be a greater number of Nigerian doctors practicing outside our borders than those within the country, indicating that we are possibly discussing over 50,000 doctors operating abroad."
He further explained that this phenomenon is facilitated not only by the high caliber of medical professionals trained in Nigeria but also through the recruitment of these doctors by countries looking for skilled healthcare workers. Often, these expatriate roles are offered without the doctors themselves applying.
Additionally, Audu noted an internal migration trend among doctors within Nigeria, with many relocating to institutions that prioritize better welfare for their staff, highlighting the commendable efforts of the military in this regard.
He emphasized that while international migration raises concerns, it is also crucial to recognize that doctors are frequently shifting employment within Nigeria based on welfare considerations.
The NMA has encouraged physicians to consider careers in the military, suggesting that the Military Salary Structure (MSS) often presents a more appealing financial package compared to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
In response, the Commanding Officer of the 312 Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel I.J. Ufua, expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as an honor for the regiment. He stated, "I believe this unit has not previously experienced such a privilege to host this esteemed group. On behalf of the officers and men of this regiment, I warmly welcome you to Kalapanzi Barracks."
