NSE President Advocates Engineering Strategies to Combat Insecurity in Nigeria

Ali Rabiu, the leader of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), has emphasized the need for engineers to utilize innovative techniques, systems thinking, and technology to assist the government in tackling the persistent insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Rabiu made these comments during the inauguration ceremony for Dr. BabaganaModu Tella as the 17th National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) in Abuja.

He described the theme of the event, "Insecurity in Nigeria: Engineering Approach for Effective and Efficient Solutions for National Development," as a relevant framework for professional intervention. He pointed out that mechanical engineering, along with the wider engineering sector, plays a crucial role in driving industrial growth, enhancing infrastructure resilience, and strengthening national security systems.

The NSE President asserted that insecurity should be addressed as a multifaceted issue that requires a variety of engineering solutions, including data analytics, surveillance technologies, local production capabilities, logistics optimization, and the development of sustainable infrastructure.

"Engineering fundamentally revolves around problem-solving. Our involvement needs to be rooted in logic, structure, modeling, and evidence-based reasoning to create sustainable solutions for intricate security issues," he stated.

During the event, the keynote speaker, Maj. Gen. Babatunde Alaya, who serves as the Director-General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), outlined the steps being taken to reinforce local defense manufacturing and effectively utilize military and paramilitary assets to maintain a secure environment conducive to economic activities.

In his presentation, Dr. Umar Buba Bindir, the guest speaker, underscored the necessity for engineers to offer practical solutions that are integrated within social systems engineering and investment strategies.

He remarked that actively engaging with leadership structures and institutions is vital for transforming engineering ideas into tangible security results.
