Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has recently expressed his mounting alarm over the surge in killings across Nigeria, particularly in the north, labeling the situation as both 'worrisome and deeply depressing.'
In an official statement issued by his Private Secretary, Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the monarch lamented the persistent bloodshed, highlighting that the value of human life, a core principle in traditional beliefs, is continuously being undermined. He unequivocally condemned all forms of violence, deeming them an attack on the nation's peace and unity.
The statement from the Royal Court of Benin articulated profound sorrow and serious concern over the ongoing brutality and murders that have plagued the nation, particularly in the northern regions. Oba Ewuare II stated, "On behalf of the entire Edo populace, I find this incessant bloodshed utterly troubling and deeply saddening. The sanctity of human life, which serves as a vital aspect of our collective humanity and cultural values, is being violated with alarming regularity. These acts of violence pose a grievous threat to the peace and cohesion of our country."
He condemned the unwarranted killings and acts of terror, which have inflicted immeasurable pain and hardship on numerous families and communities. The monarch's heart goes out to those who have suffered due to this national crisis.
Oba Ewuare II extended his condolences to the families impacted by the recent violent incidents in Kwara State, mourning the indispensable lives that have been lost. He prayed for the souls of the deceased to find peace in their eternal rest.
Moreover, he recognized the considerable challenges faced by traditional institutions in affected areas, praising their resilience in guiding their communities through trauma while upholding moral and cultural values. He assured that the Benin Kingdom stands firmly with these institutions and all Nigerians during this challenging period.
The Oba reiterated his support for both national and state security measures, commending President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to eradicating terrorism and crime and recognizing Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his security strategies implemented within the state.
He encouraged Nigerians to adhere to the law and collaborate proactively with government authorities at all levels to eradicate the menace of insecurity, calling for immediate, decisive, and sustained efforts to bring back safety, security, and justice.
Describing the pervasive violence as a nationwide evil that has brought tremendous distress to countless families, he emphasized the need for stability in order for all citizens to live without fear.
Oba Ewuare II, in solidarity with a grieving nation, fully endorsed the security initiatives being employed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at combating terrorism and crime. He also reiterated his support for the security measures being taken by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
"I urge all Nigerians to act within the law and work jointly with government entities at all levels to eliminate this plague afflicting our society. Let us unite our voices with other concerned Nigerians and stakeholders in calling for prompt and effective measures to restore peace, security, and justice throughout the land. It is our sincere prayer that stability will return, allowing every Nigerian to live free of fear," he concluded.
