Security agencies overseeing airport operations across Nigeria have committed to join forces with the Ogun State Government to guarantee efficient Hajj operations at the Gateway International Airport located in Iperu-Remo.
This cooperation was announced during a strategic security meeting that took place on Monday, involving representatives from the state government and various security agencies at the airport situated within the Ikenne Local Government Area.
Ogun State's Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, emphasized that the airport possesses the necessary infrastructure, facilities, and management expertise to support Hajj operations.
Furthermore, Dairo noted that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially recognized the airport for such activities.
He shared that the airport is a pivotal part of the state government’s economic growth strategy, enhancing Ogun State's visibility in the global aviation sector.
Dairo confirmed that all preparations for Hajj operations are in place, stating that the NCAA has certified the airport for domestic commercial flights after granting the vital approvals.
He remarked, “The goal is to conduct Hajj operations from Gateway International Airport this year. Representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, and the Department of State Services, among others, are here to establish the basic requirements for a successful operation and evaluate the facilities available at the airport.”
During the meeting, the agencies conveyed their satisfaction with the existing infrastructure and management capabilities necessary for the operations.
“The state government has assured them that it is prepared to provide all necessary support to ensure seamless operations for pilgrims, benefitting both the state and the nation,” he stated.
The commissioner revealed that a temporary camp would be set up to accommodate approximately 500 pilgrims expected to depart from the airport for the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Dapo Olumide, a consultant for Gateway International Airport, remarked that the facility, which has already started commercial flights, is outfitted with modern amenities suitable for various aircraft types.
Olumide added that security agencies are tasked with advising the state government on further measures needed to facilitate successful Hajj operations, particularly since the NCAA has fully authorized the airport for such purposes.
He mentioned that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria had previously approved the airport for Hajj operations following an inspection of its facilities, while the Ogun State Muslim Welfare Board is organizing logistics to airlift pilgrims to the Holy Land via the airport.
Uyiekpen Asuen from the NCAA confirmed that the airport meets operational standards and has been granted the necessary permits to initiate commercial flights. Asuen highlighted that it is among 17 airports across Nigeria designated for Hajj operations.
Representatives from various security agencies outlined their operational prerequisites and underscored the importance of strong collaboration among agencies to ensure effective Hajj operations.
Those present included the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Police, Amotekun Corps, Fire Service, Department of State Services, Port Health Services, along with officials from the Federal Ministry of Health.
