Mandela Obasi, the lawmaker for Ohafia North in the Abia State House of Assembly, has announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Labour Party (LP).

The Labour Party currently holds power in Abia State.

Obasi declared his shift during a meeting with Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, where he praised Otti's governance.

He expressed his desire to join the Labour Party to align himself with the governor's effectiveness.

"I came here to align myself with Governor Otti and to officially become part of the Labour Party due to the positive impact he is making in the state," he stated.

Obasi highlighted the governor's development agenda, which he believes has facilitated better engagement between politicians and the population.

"The governor's achievements are evident across Abia," he added. "In my constituency, residents frequently recognize the roads and other infrastructure developed under his administration."

He mentioned that citizens traveling to Abiriba, his home community, are often quick to acknowledge the improvements made by the Abia State Government.

However, he also attributed his decision to leave the PDP to ongoing internal conflicts within the party, which he claims have led to a lack of coherent leadership.

"I am exiting the PDP because we seem to lack a clear leader," he remarked. "Several party members are already forming alliances with other political organizations. In the Abia House of Assembly, I am among the few remaining PDP members."

Obasi expressed that after exercising patience for a prolonged period, he concluded that the party was on a path of irreversible decline.

He is optimistic that his supporters and political associates in his constituency will join him in the Labour Party in due time, asserting that his political base remains strong.

"We have established a robust presence at the grassroots level, and once we transition into the Labour Party, the difference will be apparent," he stated.
