Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has provided insight into his decision to boost the monthly funding for Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma from N41 million to N500 million right after taking office.

This increase is part of his efforts to transform the university from the precarious state he found it in.

Speaking on Thursday, during a gathering involving students and others recently released following their detention linked to protests in Ekpoma, the governor expressed his deep regret over the unrest, stating, "I was deeply pained when I witnessed the situation in my hometown."

Governor Okpebholo emphasized his distress regarding the violent outcome of the protest, underscoring his strong determination to rejuvenate Ambrose Alli University.

"The N41 million was covering all expenses, including electricity, water, printing, and salaries, which is insufficient by any standard. In contrast, under the previous administration, a single consultant was making N59 million, while the entire university community operated on N41 million," he pointed out.

He reaffirmed, "From the moment I took my oath of office, I committed to revitalizing Ambrose Alli University."

While assuring students of his administration's commitment to open dialogue, reform, and the overall progress of the university and the state, he reiterated the ongoing focus on enhancing the institution since assuming leadership.

Governor Okpebholo warned students against being manipulated by criminal elements, urging them instead to prioritize their education.

He acknowledged the prevailing security issues in Ekpoma and other parts of the nation, insisting that insecurity is a shared concern that requires a collective approach.

"Just as you fear for your lives, I too share that fear. Kidnappers do not distinguish between individuals; this is a mutual issue we all face," he noted.

Moreover, the governor highlighted that investigations reveal a significant number of those involved in criminal activities around Ekpoma are local residents.

He criticized the vandalism and looting of shops during the protests as counterproductive.

In his address, he implored students and youth to promote peace and constructive dialogue, assuring them that criminals will not find a refuge in Edo State.

Additionally, the governor disclosed that there are outstanding salaries and wage arrears totalling approximately N41 billion owed to AAU staff, mentioning that his administration is strategizing to gradually eliminate this debt.
