Olalekan Adebote has been elected as the new president of the Athletics Coaches Association of Nigeria (ACAN) in a closely contested virtual election.
In the election, which saw participation from coaches nationwide, Adebote, popularly referred to as D’Victors, received 51 votes, defeating Michael Monyei, a former international athlete, who garnered 31 votes.
In the vice-presidential election, Pat Itanyi, a coach based in the United States, was elected unopposed, accumulating 76 affirmative votes, with six votes cast against her.
Adebote takes over the position from Solomon Aliyu, who is a board member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and has finished his tenure as the national team coach.
Following the announcement of the results, the newly appointed ACAN president expressed his gratitude towards the members of the association and called for unity among the coaches across the country.
“I am truly honored and grateful for the trust you have shown in me by electing me as the President of the Athletics Coaches Association of Nigeria (ACAN),” Adebote stated after his election.
He emphasized that this victory is a collective achievement for all coaches who are dedicated to the advancement of the profession and the athletes they mentor.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to all other newly elected officials. I am eager to collaborate closely with you all as we strive to enhance our association together.
“As we progress, I want to highlight that the elections are concluded, and the real labor ahead is crucial. This is the time for coaches in every region and state to unite as one family, with a common goal of propelling athletics in Nigeria to greater heights.
“Our leadership will prioritize amplifying the coaches' voice, increasing opportunities for athletes, and building a more robust and respected ACAN,” Adebote added.
Under the new leadership, ACAN aims to address ongoing calls for better organization, collaboration, and development within Nigeria's athletics framework.
