As the 2nd Niger Delta Games approach, Ondo State athletes are finalising their training routines and are optimistic about their performance. The festival is set to commence with an opening ceremony on Friday, February 20, with participants from nine Niger Delta states expected to arrive on Thursday, February 19.
Athletes currently undergoing intensive camping in Akure have described the atmosphere as focused and conducive to peak performance. Two football players, Ola Gabriel Temitope and Olamide Agbajeola, shared their determination to win, stating that the team is already in a competitive mindset.
Temitope highlighted the players' appreciation for the organisation and support from the State Liaison Committee, noting the intensity of their training sessions. "We are training every day, and everyone is taking it seriously. We want to make Ondo State proud. We all know football is the king of sports, and we want to make it big time," he stated.
Agbajeola added that the training camp has facilitated the team's quick acclimatisation, emphasising the players' motivation stemming from the chance to represent their state. The team is aiming for gold medals at the event.
In swimming, athlete Mojisola Giwa expressed high spirits and confidence, reporting that the camp had significantly improved fitness and team cohesion. She believes Ondo State is well-positioned to compete effectively against other states.
"The preparation has been good, and we are grateful for the support. As for me, I am ready. I believe we will come back with medals," Giwa commented.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival will feature athletes from the nine participating Niger Delta states competing across 16 different sports. The event is sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited.
