One migrant has been successfully rescued while at least 50 others are believed to have drowned following a boat sinking in the Mediterranean Sea close to Tunisia, as reported by authorities.
The individual who survived spent nearly a full day in the ocean prior to being rescued. He informed aid workers that he fears that all other individuals aboard the vessel did not survive. This information was shared by Alarm Phone, a group that runs an emergency hotline for migrants facing dangers at sea.
According to Alarm Phone, the vessel took off from Tunisia, a significant departure point for migrants seeking the dangerous journey to Europe across the Mediterranean.
The armed forces of Malta confirmed that the survivor was picked up by a commercial ship operating near Tunisia and was later taken to Malta for medical care. However, both Maltese officials and Alarm Phone did not release the specific timing of the rescue operation.
Incidents of shipwrecks involving migrant vessels are frequent in the central Mediterranean, which is regarded as one of the most hazardous migration pathways in the world.
