Leaders from opposition political parties in Nigeria have voiced their rejection of the newly amended Electoral Act 2026, which was recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group, led by prominent figures from major opposition parties, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, raised concerns about the manner in which the act was approved by the National Assembly.

During a press conference, Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) articulated their stance, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to portray President Tinubu as the sole viable candidate for the presidential election in 2027.

Ahmed pointed out that data they have gathered indicates that election outcomes can be transmitted directly from all polling units, questioning why a manual provision was still included in the new act.

He expressed astonishment at the speed with which President Tinubu ratified the act, contrasting it with the prolonged deliberation of other legislative matters.

The spokesperson underscored that the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections highlighted the APC's urgency in enacting the new Electoral Act, suggesting it was designed to facilitate their electoral strategies.

Moreover, the opposition leaders also criticized the FCT election results, describing the Area Council Poll as a significant test that the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to meet.
