Emerging from international duties and still feeling the emotional and physical aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Victor Osimhen has quickly redirected his focus.

The Galatasaray and Super Eagles striker is clear about his objective: secure a victory against Manchester City to keep their UEFA Champions League ambitions alive.

Speaking following Galatasaray's intense 1–1 draw with Atletico Madrid, which has left the Turkish champions requiring a notable performance in their last group stage fixture.

Transition from AFCON Bronze to European Challenge

Recently back from AFCON 2025, where he played a crucial part for Nigeria's Super Eagles, the 27-year-old forward finished the tournament with four goals and two assists. He not only earned a place in the Team of the Tournament but also helped Nigeria clinch a bronze medal.

Resilience at RAMS Park

Galatasaray found themselves at a disadvantage early on as Giuliano Simeone scored within the first four minutes. Despite Atletico Madrid initially controlling the game, Galatasaray managed to rally.

A critical cut-back from Rolland Sallai resulted in an own goal by Marcos Llorente in the 20th minute, leveling the score for Okan Buruk’s team. Although Atletico dominated the match afterward, Galatasaray’s defense stood strong.

“I missed everyone so much”

After over a month with the national team in Morocco, Osimhen voiced the emotional experience of returning to Istanbul.

“I really missed everyone, including the fans. We were aware we would be up against a formidable opponent today,” he stated through Galatasaray’s official platform.

He commended his teammates, saying, “In a challenging game against a tough rival, we performed admirably.”

While reflecting on the match, he noted that opportunities existed to decide the outcome, but he was pleased with their effort.

Focus on the Etihad

The draw leaves Galatasaray with a straightforward challenge: win or face elimination. Only a victory at Manchester City will provide them with a viable opportunity to advance to the Champions League playoffs.

Osimhen recognizes the magnitude of the task ahead. “Manchester City is one of the world's elite teams. We'll concentrate first on our league commitments, then shift our attention to that match,” he explained.

“It won't be straightforward; however, I have faith in my team. I remain optimistic, believing we can achieve a positive result there. We must come out to play like we did against Atletico; that’s what matters most,” concluded the 2023 African Player of the Year.

All or Nothing

In a week, Galatasaray heads to the Etihad to confront Pep Guardiola’s squad, already ensured of progressing regardless of the outcome. While a win could help City secure direct qualification, for Galatasaray, this match signifies a last chance to claim their European destiny.

With a bronze medal in hand and his fitness restored, Victor Osimhen’s message is unequivocal: hope and determination are their primary tools moving forward.
